Comfortable, confidential therapy in a private practice setting.

I work with clients — individuals, couples and families — to help empower them to shake off paralyzing emotions, re-write their life stories to free their true potential to find more happiness.

One-on-One Counseling for Men & Women of All Ages.

Talk therapy, as it is called, can be life changing. Gaining perspective, finding new meaning and purpose in one’s life, sorting through painful experiences and forming different strategies to get unstuck in life; these are just a few of the reasons clients come to me. I help my clients think more clearly, feel better about themselves so they can live happier, more fulfilling lives.

Can you expect good results from your therapy experience? That answer depends on a couple important factors. If a trusting, respectful therapeutic alliance is constructed and you are open-minded and willing to change, good things can happen. I listen to my clients, meet them where they are. I provide them support and motivation to help them get unstuck. I help them find the courage to try new approaches and grow. One mantra I say often is “life’s a journey and each day gives us an opportunity to grow. Why not start now?”

Couples & Family Therapy for Relationship Success.

Life is relational and sometimes relationships run aground or get stuck in unhealthy, unsatisfying patterns. My training as a Marriage & Family Therapist is based on a holistic, systemic view of human behavior. Changing “the system” requires thorough assessment, clear treatment objectives and a client’s willingness to try new strategies.

When Couples therapy works there are some common factors. Both partners are committed to it and want their relationship to get better. Partners stop getting caught up in the content of their discussions and begin to see the process or “dance” of their relationship. Then they are willing to try new approaches which often means they stop blaming and begin trusting again. Their dance changes and they grow more emotionally connected. I see my role is to facilitate the healing conversations.

Families have different structural and emotional dynamics than couples. Families require more rules and a hierarchy of authority to function well. Families face challenges and stressors like unforeseen financial security, sudden medical or mental illnesses — even the death of a parent, parental separation, or divorce. I believe all families have the skills and resources to solve problems for themselves. I just help them do it.

My practice has focused areas of competence. I particularly enjoy working with families facing challenges as ADD/ADHD, anxiety, Asperger’s Syndrome, substance abuse, and depression.

EMDR Therapy

For over two decades, EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing therapy, has been an empirically validated and effective therapy for trauma. Numerous positive, controlled research studies have shown EMDR to be more effective in treating trauma and resultant anxiety and depression symptoms than Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Through Dual-Attention Stimulation, EMDR accesses memory and information that is stored with original thoughts, feelings, and sensations, allowing them to be reprocessed to a more adaptive resolution….and feel and function better.

I am an EMDR trained psychotherapist who assists my clients to reprocess memories tied to bad images, sensations, thoughts and emotions. Memories are reformed but without the debilitating fears, sadness and anxieties they held before. This in turn frees clients to live happier lives, perform better in their occupations, and improve personal relationships.

Judgement-free guidance and support for substance abuse.

People who are addicted to substances such as alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, or opiates often do not see things the same way as those around them do. To some, using substances is the solution to their problems and helps them cope. To them abstinence or “going cold turkey” is a scary idea. One can abstain from using addictive substances for short periods of time, but to stop and feel good about it requires new social behaviors, support from others, a different mindset, and coping skills.

Addiction is a complex issue involving psychological and biological factors that make it difficult for those affected to break free. Outcomes are better when treatment involves a comprehensive approach including medical consultation (pharmacological), psychotherapy, and 12-step recovery for social support. Ideally and only with the consent of my clients, I collaborate with family, employers, recovery sponsors, psychiatrists, and primary care physicians to coordinate care and give my clients the best chance for positive outcomes.

When I initially meet with clients dealing with alcohol and drugs, I spend a lot of time determining how they feel about using addictive substances and how they view the impact on their lives and those around them like family, spouses, and employers. I ask what it would look like if suddenly their problem were solved. There are times when intervention may be warranted. I help individuals, couples, and families navigate these difficult times by advising them about intervention strategies and making appropriate referrals to treatment. Shaming of those suffering under the grip of addiction doesn’t work. It is far more affective to cultivate a person’s buy-in to change.

When someone is substance-dependent, all of his or her relationships are affected. Addiction prevents people from gaining traction in their lives, being independent, and growing. Living or working with someone who has an alcohol or drug dependency is stressful and imposes a tremendous emotional strain. I have over 20 years’ experience helping those facing addiction, their spouses and families find paths to recovery and stay on them.
